Seoul Tickets: Gate Price Against Booking Ahead

Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung are ₩3,000 each; Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and Jongmyo are ₩1,000 each. Buying all five separately comes to ₩9,000, and the integrated coupon book is ₩6,000 and valid for six months.

Two palaces at full price already cost ₩6,000, so the pass breaks even on the second site and pays from the third. It is sold only at the ticket windows of those five sites — there is no online version and no reseller.

The Huwon garden at Changdeokgung is the exception to all of this: ₩5,000 on top of a palace ticket, guided timed entry, half the places released online at 10:00 six days before and half at the gate on the day. It is the only ticket in Seoul that genuinely sells out.

And the cheapest route of all is hanbok: a full traditional outfit makes every palace free, and rentals start at about $7.

The Discover Seoul Pass is the main city pass, bundling attraction entries and some transport value into a fixed-hour product.

Whether it pays depends entirely on whether you would otherwise buy the expensive tickets, and in Seoul most visitors would not. The maths is unusually easy here because the base rate of sightseeing is so low: a day of palaces, museums and markets costs ₩3,000 to ₩10,000 in admissions. A pass only wins if you stack the ₩29,000 and ₩31,000 observatories and a theme park into two or three days — which is a specific kind of trip.

The honest test is to write down the five things you actually intend to enter, price them from the table above, and compare. The pass page does that in detail.

On transport, the equivalent question is the Climate Card short-term pass: ₩10,000 for three days against ₩1,550 a ride, which pays from about two and a half rides a day.

Two things, and neither of them is a ticket window.

The Huwon garden session. Released at 10:00 Korean time six days before the visit, one hundred places per session, half online. In April, May, October and November the online allocation goes within minutes.

A DMZ tour. The border cannot be visited independently, passport details are registered in advance, and the autumn dates fill. Two or three days ahead is usually enough.

Everything else — palaces, museums, markets, towers, theme parks — can be bought on the day, and for the observatories that is actively the better choice. If you are travelling in October or over a public holiday, add accommodation to the list of things to sort early; that is where the real scarcity is.
