Lotte World: Tickets, Hours and the Saving That Is Real

The indoor park opened in 1989 and is still one of the largest covered theme parks in the world: a multi-storey atrium under a glass roof, with rides stacked around the edges, a monorail circling above the crowd, an ice rink at the bottom and parades that run through the middle of the afternoon.

Magic Island sits outside on Seokchon Lake, connected by a bridge, with the bigger outdoor rides — the drop tower, the roller coaster and the Gyro Drop that everybody photographs against Lotte World Tower.

The practical consequence of that split is weather. When it rains, snows or sits at minus twelve in January, the outdoor half closes and the indoor half carries on exactly as normal. No other major attraction in Seoul is so nearly weather-proof, and that is the main argument for putting it in the diary as a flexible day rather than a fixed one.

Lotte World is a Seoul institution and it is busy: school holidays, weekends and any public holiday put the popular rides above an hour.

Three things help. Arrive at opening rather than at eleven, and do the outdoor rides first while the indoor park is still filling. Take lunch early or late, because the food courts jam between twelve and one. And treat the parade times as free space — while the parade runs through the atrium, the queues on the upper floors drop noticeably.

The park sells an express pass system that shortens waits, priced separately from admission; whether it is worth it depends entirely on the day, and on a quiet winter weekday it is money wasted.

An afternoon ticket exists for a half-day visit and is cheaper than the full-day equivalent. With the park open to 21:00 on weekdays and 22:00 at weekends, an entry at 16:00 still gives five or six hours.

For families this is the easiest full day in Seoul: everything is under one roof, the metro arrives underground, there are lockers, pushchair rentals and enough small-child rides that a four-year-old is not standing around watching. The with-kids page covers the wider city.

For adults without children, the honest answer is that Lotte World is a good rainy day and a poor sunny one. The rides are decent rather than world-class, and on a clear day in Seoul the same ₩61,000 buys a palace, a market lunch, a mountain walk and an observatory ticket with change.

The exception is the Korean-school-uniform rental that operates around the park — a domestic custom in which visitors dress in school uniforms for the day. It is a genuinely popular thing to do here, and a package that bundles it with admission exists.
